Originally published anonymously in 1815, the identity of the author of the work remains unknown, although it is sometimes ascribed - apparently wrongly - to Francis Barrett. Waite's contribution was largely editorial: he revised many of the biographies and added that of Cagliostro, at the same time excising one of its more interesting chapters. The original interesting, but sometimes inaccurate, bibliography of alchemy and hermetic philosophy remains appended.

Published by George Redway, London in 1888 - First edition thus Hardcover. 8vo. 316 pp., (+ 4pp catalogue of books published by Redway tipped in at rear). Attractively rebound in quarter leather with cloth boards, dark blue leather spine with gilt embossed maroon label, raised bands, maroon cloth boards, new endpapers, page edges neatly cropped and speckled, internals quite clean though a bit browned. Top right corner of half title page has been cut off but re-enforced on stiff paper; Full title page has some of the top corners torn off, but it also has been re-enforced on stiff paper. Preface page has a small tear at bottom left of page, otherwise Book is in Very Good condition.
